Level 1: Intro to Farming

Interactive Group Field Trips for Level 1 Trainees

We know that the best place to learn how to farm is in the field. For this reason, the Level 1 program has been designed to augment and bring to life the concepts that trainees learn in their online classroom work. These half- to full-day trips are designed to introduce Level 1 trainees to diverse farm operations and practical beginner farmer skills. Additionally, they serve as networking and community building opportunities for Level 1 trainees. Trainees can expect to engage in projects such as:

  • Seed-starting and transplanting
  • Building structures for season extension
  • Bed preparation and planting
  • Large harvests
  • Livestock care and tending

These days will occur throughout the region and the schedule will be set early in the calendar year.

ONLINE CLASSROOM LEARNING

During the winter months (January – March), trainees will meet weekly on Zoom to learn more about technical farming skills and farm business management. These lecture-style classes are led by experienced farmers from across the region – peer-to-peer learning is central to our educational programming.
