Soil Health to Go! with One Acre Farm

March 13 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm EDT

During his senior year of college, Farmer Mike was looking for something constructive to do. He decided to volunteer at a local farm and loved it. After pursuing a career in film for a few years, the land kept calling to him. He began working at One Straw Farm in White Hall, MD, eventually purchasing his own land. Mike is an instrumental advocate for the farming community, focused on bringing people together to fortify the local food economy and system.

From humble beginnings on a much smaller piece of land, One Acre Farm now sits on 34 acres in Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve. Techniques to steward the land in a high-production, diverse vegetable operation include adding compost, to enrich the soil, planting cover crops in the fall when the fields are not in use, to capture nutrients, and using drip irrigation to save water. The operation does not use synthetic amendments or pesticides, while minimizing inputs and soil disturbance when possible. They believe that healthy soil creates healthy plants that are better suited to fend off bugs and diseases, and in turn, are healthier for their customers.

Join Million Acre Challenge on Wednesday, March 13 for a free, virtual lunch & learn, to learn more from Farmer Mike. Register here, and we’ll see you there!
