The orchard or “food forest” will commemorate the tree foods that helped sustain self-liberators on their journey to freedom on the Underground Railroad. It will serve as an educational resource as well as producing marketable fruit and nut crops including chestnuts and paw paws for years to come.

This project is being funded through a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust. We will be holding a workshop and volunteer day titled Planting a Food Forest on March 25th, 2023 in which volunteers will help with the installation of the orchard and learn about some of the best adapted tree crops for our region.
