Foodie Fridays: The People’s Medicine

August 25 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Plants have been used in medicine for thousands of years. Today they can be found in 40% of prescription drugs in the Western world. Yet, many consumers are unaware of this deeply rooted connection. Explore the intersection between traditional and holistic wellness practices, land stewardship, and home herbalism with Rhiannon Smith, founder of a Takoma Park-based herbal apothecary.

Rhiannon believes that the plants around us are our sacred guides and sweet friends. Kiyoshi Botanicals was inspired by her grandmothers who immigrated from Japan and started a Japanese gift shop on Connecticut Ave in Washington, DC in the 1960s as well as her ancestor Kiyoshi, a medicine man who had an agricultural business in Japan. Through Kiyoshi Botanicals, she wants to engage with the community around healing and growth, cultivate curiosity, and hold space for creativity. She’s interested in crafting plant remedies that provide holistic wellness strategies, help friends feel empowered when it comes to their health, provide resources that inspire further investigation, and foster harmonious connections between plants & people. Her offerings include tinctures, dried teas, extracts, natural skincare, DIY kits, and more!
