Buffer Establishment and Soil Health

Friday 4/5 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Join the Million Acre Challenge and University of Maryland Extension for a soil health and buffer establishment field day at UMES Research and Education Farm

This first half of the workshop will feature in-field soil health demonstrations comparing minimally disturbed land (soy field), highly disturbed (vegetable fields) and permanent beds. Demos may include: double infiltration rings, penetrometer and wire flags for compaction, soil temperature on covered/canopy vs bare ground, slake test, tabletop erosion model, root boxes and/or cover crop buckets.

During the second half of the day, we will welcome Liz Warren, Delmarva Poultry Association, Julie Devers,NRCS, and Henriette den Ouden, UMES Extension to discuss hedgerow and buffer establishment and maintenance. This discussion will focus on soil health, co-benefits of edge-of-field practices, and funding opportunities.
