New Castle Conservation District is looking for a summer intern to join our urban agriculture team. This team works with a wide range of stakeholders to promote urban agriculture through education, funding opportunities, technical assistance, projects, networking, and community building.
The intern will be primarily assisting with development and execution of the NCCD’s Urban Agriculture Assets Inventory. The purpose of this project is to help better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the current local urban ag community and identify areas of opportunity for growth and/or change. This project will document the existing foundation of urban agriculture in New Castle County and will have long lasting impacts throughout the state.
Upon completion of the internship, the intern can expect to have:
➔ Gained practical experience in developing a real world project and directly engaging with diverse communities
➔ Exposure to the a-z process of conducting a community assessment
➔ Successfully networked with the rapidly growing urban ag community throughout New Castle County, DE
➔ Learned how to apply systems thinking to better understand how urban agriculture impacts our local food system
➔ Opportunities to incorporate skills/education that align with the intern’s long term career goals
➔ Engage with urban ag stakeholders from diverse backgrounds in a friendly and understanding manner via email, calls, and in-person.
➔ Assist in the creation of assessment tools, such as surveys, guides, and protocols.
➔ Assist in the organizing, preparation, and execution of interviews, community meetings, and focus groups
➔ Assist with scheduling and conducting site visits for urban ag projects throughout New Castle County
➔ Provide support to social media and outreach efforts including the promotion of inventory activities
➔ Critically review urban agriculture resources and local/state policies
➔ Assist in analyzing inventory data and developing innovative ways to display inventory information
➔ Documenting the inventory process in a clear and replicable manner
➔ Other duties as assigned
➔ Recent highschool graduates, undergraduate students with an interest in urban agriculture, food systems, community engagement, and/or program evaluation.
➔ Must be able to commute to the NCCD office located at 2430 Old County Rd, Newark, DE
➔ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
➔ Must be able to handle the demands of progressing multiple projects at once
➔ Must be flexible to work occasional Saturdays and evenings
➔ Thrive working in a collaborative environment
➔ Strong critical and creative thinking skills
➔ Comfortable in engaging in conversations with strangers
➔ Belief in community led movements and local project ownership
➔ Adobe Creative Suite experience is a plus
➔ Needs assessments or program evaluation experience is a plus
