Million Acre Challenge/Soil Health Benchmark Study Program Assistant Position

Position Description:
Future Harvest is seeking a part-time, contractual Program Assistant to work directly with the Research Director on activities related to the Million Acre Challenge and the Pasa Soil Health Benchmark Study.

The Million Acre Challenge is a collaborative project driven by a network of regional organizations, working together to advance healthy soils and regenerative agriculture on one million acres of Maryland agricultural land, and across the Chesapeake region, by 2030. We use soil health science, economics, education, and incentives to achieve our mission. Since 2019, we have partnered with Pasa Sustainable Agriculture to expand their Soil Health Benchmark Study- a large scale citizen science research project that collects soil health data along with detailed farm management data to help farmers understand the impact of management on soil health, into Maryland.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Collecting soil samples
Collecting/reviewing farm management records
Entering/organizing data
Communicating with Farmer Research Collaborators
Planning/Attending project meetings and educational events

Requirements:

The Program Assistant position will require travel across the state, especially during peak soil sampling season from mid-October to late November. Applicants should have:

Reliable transportation
Flexible schedule (especially during soil sampling season, Oct-Nov)
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Ability to work outside in challenging weather conditions
Bachelor’s degree in agricultural sciences, and/or relevant farming experience
Familiarity with excel, google suite
Ability to work independently/self-motivate
Compensation:
Part-time, contractual position with variable hours (approx 1.5 day/wk or 600 hours per year)
$25/hr; Reimbursement for travel at federal mileage rate.
