Amaranth Acres is looking to immediately hire a full-time farmhand to work and live on the farm. The individual will work with vegetable crops, care of goats and chickens, and maintenance activities around the farm, such as fence and tree management. The ideal candidate has cared for, or is interested in caring for, animals and engaging with all aspects of a small diversified farm. Don’t worry if you don’t have a ton of experience! Anything you don’t know, including operating heavy machinery, we will teach you. However, a good attitude, the ability to learn quickly, and tolerance of outdoor manual labor are a must.
ABOUT AMARANTH ACRES
Amaranth Acres is a regenerative farm located in Dickerson, MD, free of pesticide and synthetic fertilizer. We primarily sell to retail customers and to food banks in bulk. We have had a CSA in the past and, with your help, are hoping to revive the CSA this summer. As a diversified farm, the tasks are varied, and there is plenty of opportunity to gain experience and learn about how to run a farm. We are always growing and adapting what we do, and while the priority is meeting the existing demands, creativity is welcomed. For example, we are currently in the early stages of establishing a silvopasture for our goats, and we periodically cook and sell pickles as value-added products.
HOURS
This is a full-time position, but as with any farm, hours will vary with the seasons. Spring and summer (March – September) have longer hours, but fall and winter require fewer hours.
SALARY
$30,000+ depending on experience + free housing
HOUSING AND LOCATION
There is a house with all the amenities (full kitchen, laundry) available for you on-site. The farm itself is about a 5-minute drive from the Barnesville MARC station, a 2-minute drive to Sugarloaf Mountain, and 20 minutes to either Frederick, Poolesville, or Germantown. Couples and families are welcome, though only one full-time salaried position is available.
