Owl’s Nest Farm
2023 Farm teammate job description
Owl’s Nest Farm grows Certified Naturally Grown produce for CSA members, farmers market customers, restaurants, and friends on five acres just 15 miles from Washington, DC.
A teammate position at Owl’s Nest Farm is hard work with your body; it’s demanding and exhausting and often wonderful. Not only will you work outside in all weather conditions, but we also need you to move quickly and efficiently. We think you’ll learn a lot, but this is a paid job, not an internship or apprenticeship.
We’re looking for someone who gives a damn about the people they work with: collective care and responsibility are central to our team culture. Showing up consistently and on time is an essential part of your collective responsibility here. This farm is navigating a transition towards a worker ownership model, and is looking for a person excited about participating in a highly cooperative space.
We’re hiring for both full-time and part-time roles on a rolling basis, and start date will be during April 2023.
Components of Job
Daily physical field work, including: greenhouse seeding, planting, mulching, row-covering, weeding, harvesting, washing, and packing
Working outside in all weather conditions, including HEAT, rain, and cold.
Frequent heavy lifting of 25-50 pounds
Following verbal and written instructions
Maintaining clear and accurate records of field work and harvest
Building relationships with CSA members and customers at pickups and markets
Making deliveries in DC
Skills and qualities we’re looking for:
Reliability and punctuality
Flexibility and adaptability
Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and ask questions
Excellent verbal communication skills and positive attitude
Ability to appropriately balance speed and quality of work
A willingness to learn and incorporate feedback.
Ability to build strong relationships with diverse individuals in both teamwork and customer service settings
Ability to work well independently and harmoniously in group settings
Sense of humor and desire to have fun
Basic math skills
Must be able to lift 50 pounds and perform strenuous physical tasks over and over
Must have a driver’s license and clean driving record
Previous experience with farming and/or other physical jobs is a big plus!
Compensation: starts at $13.50/hour, with opportunities for raises after your first 30 days for full-timers and 200 hours for part-timers
Other neat perks include:
Access to surplus produce + market bartering
Opportunities for independent projects for motivated individuals
Paid sick time after your first 30 days for full-timers and 200 hours for part-timers
End-of season bonus and part-time winter hours may be available
